3rd Workshop on Artificial Life and Evolutionary Algorithms

As the title clearly indicates, this workshop will focus on scientific research and applications of Artificial Life (ALife) and Evolutionary Algorithms (EA). Therefore, it will cover work on computer based bio-inspired models for studying natural systems as well as for solving engineering and social problems. In general, self-organisation, emergence and evolution of multicomponent systems are themes to be addressed by this workshop. We are targeting the ALife community, the EA community and researchers working in the overlap of these two areas, from computer science and exact sciences in general to social sciences. Recently self-organisation has been gaining popularity among the management community, which is a clear signal that the ALEA themes are extending over new research areas.

Scope

ALEA’07 is the third international workshop, held in Portugal, specifically dedicated both to the theory and application of Artificial Life (ALife) and Evolutionary Algorithms (EA). ALife and EA solutions have been gaining popularity in solving complex problems of different industrial, economical, and scientific domains. This workshop is a good opportunity to gather researchers to present their latest research and to discuss current developments and applications.

The format of the meeting will be designed to stimulate close interaction between members of these scientific communities. ALEA’07 has the purpose of thriving to develop this research area in Portugal, through discussion among researchers and outstanding international scientists.

The workshop will consist of an invited talk, oral presentations, poster sessions and ample time for organised discussion. The best accepted papers will appear in the proceedings published by Springer in the LNAI series. The remaining accepted papers and posters will be published in a local edition, both in hard-copy, CD-ROM and on the web.

The workshop is sponsored by APPIA, the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence. It will be part of a set of Workshops that, together, will form the 13th Portuguese Conference on Artifical Intelligence (EPIA 2007).

Some ideas just came up, after a talk I had with Klaas , who is making a PhD on memetics... In cultural transmission of fads and so on, I've heard that there are models in which the majority imitates an elite, and the elite tries to go away from the crowd, and that gives you the dynamics... The idea is that maybe another way of looking at this phenomenon is to take the analogy of flocking: birds try to keep together (safety, direction, whatever reason), but also keep average distance to their neighbours (not to crash). If we take this mechanism into the memetic space, people will imitate many aspects surrounding them, just because of mirron neurons and the evolutionary advantage of imitation. But the separation is also important, for people assert their individuality with it... This could be seen as taking the inverse of a meme... starting to sounds like dialectics...
